Answering my own questions
Answering my own questions A few nights ago I insinuated that there was a list of questions prospective students ought to be asking about schools theyre considering, headed off with the questions What is the student mentality with regard to work? Is the program composed of self-starters, with very little peer pressure to work hard, or do students in the program encourage each other to work hard? Is hard work a virtue or an expletive? Is there a lot of competition between students, and is it destructive competition? Before I give a set of answers about MIT, I want you to stop reading and think about what your ideal program would be like. Unlike questions about campus safety or housing prices, these questions dont actually have good or bad answers. You just have to know yourself and know what you need and want as a student. (A question like Is the campus safe? obviously has a good answer and a bad answer. A question like What is the student mentality with regard to work? is much more open to different strokes for different folks.) Is hard work a virtue or an expletive? Hard work is a virtue at MIT. In fact, I dont think Id be exaggerating if I said hard work is the virtue at MIT. MIT is often said to be more egalitarian than our peer institutions; students here are less impressed by your granddaddys yacht than we are by people who take 100 units in one term. (Sidenote, for reference: normal courseload is 48 units, and one unit is supposed to equal one hour per week spent on the class. 100 units is absurd and awe-inspiring.) I learned a lot of different things from different schools. MIT is a very good place I was just in love with it. It has developed for itself a spirit, so that every member of the whole place thinks that its the most wonderful place in the world and while you dont get a good sense of proportion there, you do get an excellent sense of being with it and in it, and having motivation and desire to keep on. -Richard Feynman (Class of 1939) People get very caught up in the idea that we all work hard because we have to that the courseload here is so bone-crushingly difficult that we have to work night and day, sunrise, sunset, just to keep our heads above water. Ill admit there are weeks like that (see last terms midterm week of death). But there really is an element of all of us doing it to ourselves were here because we secretly or not-so-secretly like working right at the edge of our abilities. I think I can confidently generalize that we all like a challenge. (Adam likes to quote Road Trip: If it were easy, it would just be called the way.) MIT is not really a great place for grade-grubbers or the easily-discouraged. Is the program composed of self-starters, with very little peer pressure to work hard, or do students in the program encourage each other to work hard? This is the question Ive been asking of every graduate program with which I interview, and I think the answer to this question is extremely telling. MIT is most definitely an environment in which students encourage other students to work to the best of their abilities; in a sense, theres a great deal of peer pressure to achieve excellence. Some of this is unconscious when youre surrounded by smart people doing cool stuff, its natural to want to do cool stuff too. At some schools, I suppose you join the group by buying expensive handbags, but at MIT, you join the group by learning how to push yourself and produce good work. (See this article, one of my all-time favorite Tech columns.) One of the faculty members interviewing me a few weeks ago said the graduate students in her program had to be self-starters in order to achieve that there wasnt much pressure from other students to spend long hours in the lab or get a paper published in a top journal. I have to admit this really turned me off after four years of a culture that supports aiming high, I dont think Id be happy surrounded by students who didnt really concern themselves with whether or not their work was groundbreaking. Four years ago, I chose between undergraduate programs at Ohio State and at MIT. Theres often a feeling among students that MIT is the hard road, and that going to state school would mean an automatic 4.0 and admission into a top grad school. Im sure for some students, that would work; it wouldnt work for me. I do consider myself to be a self-starter (you almost have to be to succeed in any college, let alone an elite one), but I need nudges from other students and from difficult coursework in order to not become bored to death. I dont think I would have gotten a 4.0 at OSU, because I think I would have gotten bored and slacked off. (Many of us at MIT have got bored and slacked off stories Adam stopped doing his homework in fourth grade because it was stupid and instead played with glue all day, I got bored in third grade and started reading books inside my desk instead of listening to the teacher. You probably know how it goes.) Is there a lot of competition between students, and is it destructive competition? A thousand times no. I suppose theres competition (after all, I just said that we all love a challenge), but theres never sabotage on a grand scale like the rumors you hear about cutthroat colleges. I think part of this stems from a) notoriously difficult problem sets combined with b) most freshmen taking the same classes freshman year, you form study groups with other people in your classes who live in your dorm, and you get very used to working together and helping other people think through problems. Although it certainly didnt seem fun at the time, I have fond memories of my 18.02 study group doing psets freshman year while munching on pizza, listening to 80s music, and gossiping. Jessie wrote an entry this fall about getting help from a fellow dorm resident in the middle of the night. We MIT students have each others backs. I hope this has helped a little. Aditya is right, its hard to get straight answers to this question out of anyone. But I think its a terribly important element of student culture, and I hope this description excites you rather than turning you off to MIT. Quickly answering a few questions before bed: 1. Everyone is always welcome to email me (my email address is on the blog banner), although of course I make no guarantees as to the speed of my responses! 2. Dan asked, 1) Are there math UROPs? What kind of research can an undergraduate do in mathematics? 2) You say masters degrees in pure sciences arent very useful? Does that hold true with mathematics? And is environmental science considered a pure science? There are math UROPs a list of past course 18 UROP supervisors is here. (Admittedly, this is not a long list compared to the number of supervisors in other departments. And to be honest, I have no idea what on earth a math UROP would do!) I believe most of the aspiring mathematicians Ive known have gone straight to PhD programs (or industry course 18 grads make mad money straight out of undergrad), but Im not sure if thats because I only know a few math undergrads and therefore my sample is skewed. 3. Minh and Lizzy asked how I found my UROP position. In the middle of the summer after my freshman year, I emailed about 10 professors whose research sounded interesting, introducing myself and sending a resume of my previous lab experience (Id worked at the NIH that summer). Two emailed me back and I interviewed with one; two and a half years later, Im still in the same lab I interviewed with in August 2003! Ive since found that it might be a better strategy to email professors administrative assistants, if you can find the addresses professors get tons of email, and your message might get lost in the deluge. Lizzy also asked how early housing would work I have no clue, and youd be better off emailing Housing (theyre very nice!). Incoming freshmen often come early for programs like Project Interphase or to try out for a fall sport, and of course there are plenty of dorm rooms open, but Im not really sure how it would work logistically. 4. Alexandre commented, I like how the MIT Student/Future Harvard Medical Student read a material safety sheet that warned of irreversible effects [of phenol/chloroform] and decided to test some on her fingers! Hey, a good science education teaches you to question everything. Just wanted to make sure I could trust those material safety data sheets! ;) 5. As for everyone who wondered what would happen to the blog once I graduate take that up with Ben, hes the boss. :) Seriously, though, I promise to keep the bloggers informed of my doings, and they can disseminate that information as they see fit!

Descriptive Essay About Cinderella - 1364 Words
Iââ¬â¢m in Disney World, Orlando Florida. Iââ¬â¢m dressed as Cinderella. Everyone smiles down at me in a fond gaze. My dadââ¬â¢s eyes twinkle as he holds my hand and my mother smiles brightly when she takes my picture on the Polaroid. Iââ¬â¢m fuming. What I aspired wanted to be was Jack Sparrow. ââ¬Å"How on earth,â⬠I thought, ââ¬Å"am I supposed to do anything cool in this ridiculously tight blue dress?â⬠Nothing. Absolutely nothing. We step onto the Disney Rail Road. There were a few people in our section. I thought nothing of it as I looked out the window as the world bullets past me. Breathing on the window I doodled away in the fog, bored and restless. I donââ¬â¢t like sitting and doing nothing. It makes me feel guilty because I could be doing so many more thingsâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦And the hate they had towards me, thought they didnââ¬â¢t know I was gay. I was young. I remember looking up to Jack Sparrow, and wishing to be Mr. Incredible . I remember the desire to be Prince Charming rather than Cinderella. I imagined that I would be the hero in a zombie apocalypse rather than the damsel in distress. I knew I was a little different; and I was ashamed. I pent up that anger, and bit by bit it consumed me. I feel the hot heat thrum in my hands and face when I hear those malicious jokes. But I smile sweetly and stay quiet. How can I say anything? Theyââ¬â¢re my family after all. Staying under the radar, I gradually became disgusted of myself. I knew, of course, attraction was attraction. I knew, of course, that I personally would rather see two men holding hands then two men holding guns. I knew, of course, that I was going to hell. Throughout the years I was shocked again and again how brutal people could be. One of the reasons that many people in my Catholic Community voted Obama, rather than, Hillary Clinton was because she supported LGBTQ+. And I felt I couldnââ¬â¢t be more alone. I grew up in a rigorous, strict, traditional Catholic household. I was required to memorize 10 to 30 Catechism Questions per day to maintain my religious tradition. It felt more like an affliction to me. Abraham Lincoln Essay - 1625 Words
Abraham Lincoln Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809 in a log cabin in Hardin Kentucky. His father Thomas Lincoln was a carpenter and farmer who was always very poor. Both of his parents were members of a Baptist congregation which had split from another church because of its views against slavery. This is where Abe first developed his own opposition to slavery. When Abe was nine the family moved to Spencer, Indiana, and his mother Nancy died from milk sickness. Milk sickness was a disease acquired by drinking the milk of cows which had grazed on poisonous white snakeroot. Soon after, Thomas married Sarah Bush Johnston who treated Abe like her own son. While in Congress he became known for his opposition to the Mexican War and slavery. He worked hard for the 1848 Whig candidate Zachary Taylor. Lincoln hoped that this hard work would help him get the position of Commissioner of the General Land Office, but it never happened. So Lincoln decided to drop politics and return to practicing law. In 1854, Lincoln got caught back up in politics in the debates of slavery. He opposed the views of Stephan A. Douglas, and in particular, the Kansas-Nebraska act. In a speech in Springfield, he attacked the compromises about slavery and the democratic views contained in the Declaration of Independence. He tried and failed to become a Senator in 1855, but he received some support for the Republican Vice-Presidential nomination in 1856. He soon found himself moving away from the Whig party, and moving towards the newly formed Republican Party. In 1856, he finally became a Republican. He quickly came to the front of this party as an opponent of slavery who could win both the abolitionists and the conservative free-staters. In 1856 at the Republican national convention, he became a possible vice president candidate. He opposed the Dred Scott in 1857 and gave his famous House Divided Speech in 1858. Operations Management - 3430 Words
Introduction I: The Campus Wedding (A) (B) In the case of the Adams-Jackson wedding, the concern was being able to put together a wedding with such limited time (approximately 3 weeks). In operations management, coordinating activities to come together is one thing; another aspect is finding how long this will take is another. In project management, the planning, directing and controlling resources to meet the technical, cost, and time constraints of a project are crucial to success! Some of the tools used to determine these constraints include networking and determining the critical path of a project, which is the sequence of activities that forms the longest chain in terms of time to complete. Not until these sequences have beenâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦In 1957, DuPont developed the project management method that was to become the critical path method (CPM). As seen in the case of The Campus Wedding, by utilizing the CPM, managers are able to take a closer look to the complexities of a pr oject and their timelines. The CPM provides some excellent benefits, which include an easy to read graphical view of a project. It also predicts the time required to complete the project, and illustrates which activities, specifically, are critical to maintaining the schedule and which are not. This is useful in operations management because it provides valuable insight to see if, or whether a project will be completed on time and what may occur if there are delays. Pregnancy is one of the most amazing and life changing events that a woman can experience. Bringing a baby into the world is a responsibility that is a life long journey. Yet, there is a high difference between teen pregnancy and adult pregnancy. Teen years are some of the most important years of your life. Being pregnant as a teen, it is more likely that you are not stable and still immature. Taking care of another life can be very difficult because babies need you at all times. Being a parent in your teen years means you are going to have to drop almost everything you do and change your ways of life. The lifestyle of an adult and a teen are completely different. Maintaining a baby and school can get very stressful, leading the teen to drop out of high school. Without a high school diploma, that means a lower paying job, and low-income. Having a child is very expensive and without the financial stability you need to have, it does not provide a stable family. Also, with the education cut short, a teenage mother may lack job skills making it hard for her to find and keep a job. Being able to provide diapers, healthy food, clothing, and medical bills get very costly. Being pregnant as an adult is a much more responsible choice. Adults are more mature and most likely have the proper care. Unlike a teenager, you live in your own house and not with your parents. With graduating high school and having a college degree, the financial stability is more promising. Being an adult having a child is more likely to have a partner, rather than a teenager. With having a partner, they can help take care of the baby when the mother needs her own time. Waiting until marriage or adult years is even better because the mother will have a partner to help out with finances and taking proper care of the baby while out of work. An adult can provide the child with basic needs such as nutritious foods, a safe environment, appropriate clothing for weather conditions, etc. As a parent you need physical and emotional needs to be met that as a teen are probably not. The mother needs to be accepting to the responsibilities of being a mother. An adult has a better understanding of spending quality time with her baby and set good examples. Teenage pregnancy comes with many more complications then adult pregnancy does. Teenagers are not fully developed which means they are still growing while the baby is in the womb. Since the teenage mother is still growing herself, she needs to eat properly not only for her own, but for normal growth of the fetus. In your teen years, it is common to go out and party with your friends. Being pregnant it is very dangerous if you drink, smoke, or do drugs. Many things can go wrong in the pregnancy if the mother does not take care of herself by eating badly, drinking, or doing drugs. Teenagers already have a higher risk than adults do, of complications during their pregnancy. By not following what is best for the babyââ¬â¢s sake, it is a huge risk the baby will become a miscarriage. When a teenager has a baby, it is most likely to have a low birth rate and are predisposed to a variety of illnesses. Teenagers sometimes develop a illness called preeclampsia which is a severe condition of high blood pressure. While pregnant, you are supposed to stay away from certain foods. If a mother does not eat correctly while pregnant, it can result to the baby being born with serious illnesses and cause the baby to die within itââ¬â¢s first year of birth. Also, taking vitamins is very important when you are pregnant to keep you and the baby healthy. All of these responsibilities may be hard for a teenager to follow because of the lifestyle she is use to. When babies are born by an adult, they get a better education then babies born by teenagers. Studies have shown that babies born to a teenager are more likely to suffer health, social, and emotional problems. Mothers need to be able to communicate with their child, and it is easier for an adult who has more experience with communicating skills then a teenager. Most teenagers who have babies probably live with their parents, which leaves little time to get to know their child. It is likely to have the teenagers mother and father take care of the baby which makes them somewhat closer to the baby then the mother. Teenagers who are parenting often start to depend on their family or public assistance. Teen mothers are likely to live in poverty and to go into welfare within the first few years of parenting. Some studies also show that a child born to a teen mom has a higher chance of to repeat a grade and perform poorly in school because they did not get the adult education when they were younger. Teenagers who get pregnant can usually push away the babyââ¬â¢s father, to leave the mother with no support. Many people will also look at her lowly, and if the dad is not there by her side it can leave people to assume she got pregnant on purpose. Teenage parents need all the support they can get because it is a very hard thing to go through. In many cases, the father leaves or is very unwilling to take responsibility in the first place, and the mother is left to be a single teen parent. In conclusion, I think the birth of a child is one of the most amazing events that can occur in a womanââ¬â¢s life. Whether a teen or an adult, bringing a baby into the world is a huge responsibility and commitment. I believe that an adult is far more prepared and experienced in life to raise a child. As I have explained in my paper, for society and for the baby, It is better for an adult to have a child rather a teen.
